In 1986 is immunotherapie geïntroduceerd. De doeltreffendheid en tolerantie ervan zijn geleidelijk erkend, eerst door de WGO (Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie) in 1998¹ en vervolgens door de ARIA-consensus (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma) in 2001².

Meta-analysen uitgevoerd bij rinitis en allergische astma (Wilson 2005³, Penagos 2006- 2008^4,5) bevestigden ook de doeltreffendheid en tolerantie. Deze studies worden in de internationale consensussen aanvaard, maar blijven onvoldoende voor gezondheidsinstanties die de voorkeur geven aan grootschalige fase III-studies.

Vandaag hebben de ARIA-consensus 2008⁶ en het referentiedocument van de WAO (World Allergy Organization) 2009⁷ de indicaties van sublinguale immunotherapie duidelijk gevalideerd.

In dit verband heeft het EMEA (Europees geneesmiddelenagentschap) in 2008 aanbevelingen gepubliceerd over de uitvoering van klinische studies die allergeenspecifieke producten bij allergische rinitis evalueren⁸.
